چکیده

We present the first observations of a Herbig Ae star with a circumstellar disk by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE ), as well as a simultaneous observation of the star obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). The spectra of AB Aurigae show emission and absorption features arising from gasses that have a wide range in temperature, from hot O VI emission to cold H2 and CO absorption. Emissions from the highly ionized species O VI and C III present in the FUSE spectrum are redshifted, while absorption features arising from low-ionization species like O I, N I, and Si II are blueshifted and show characteristic stellar wind line-profiles. We find the total column density of H2 toward AB Aur from the FUSE spectrum, N(H2) = (6.8 ± 0.5) × 10 19 cm. The gas kinetic temperature of the H2 derived from the ratio N(J = 1)/N(J = 0) is 65 ± 4 K. The column density of the CO observed in the STIS spectrum is N(CO) = (7.1 ± 0.5) × 10 cm, giving a CO/H2 ratio of (1.04±0.11)×10 . We also use the STIS spectrum to find the column density of H I, permitting us to calculate the total column density of hydrogen atoms, the fractional abundance of H2, and the gas-to-dust ratio. A Wind Analysis of an Evolved Giant - Fuse and Hst/stis Observations of an Eclipsing Symbiotic Binary

A major outstanding problem in stellar astrophysics lies in understanding the wind generation mechanism by which evolved giants lose mass. Phase-resolved observations of eclipsing symbiotic binary systems, containing a mass-losing giant and a hot white dwarf, are ideal for studying the wind generation mechanisms in evolved stars. For such systems we use the orbital motion of the dwarf through t...

Where are the hot ion lines in classical T Tauri stars formed ?

Where are the hot ion lines in classical T Tauri stars formed ? ABSTRACT Context. Classical T Tauri stars (hereafter CTTS) show a plethora of in-and outflow signatures in a variety of wavelength bands. Aims. In order to constrain gas velocities and temperatures, we analyse the emission in the hot ion lines. Methods. We use all available archival FUSE spectra of CTTS to measure the widths, fluxe...

A Far-ultraviolet Study of the Nova-like V794 Aquilae

V794 Aql was observed in a high state with the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST STIS) on 2003 August 28, and with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE ) on 2004May 13. We present here a spectral analysis of the FUSE andHST STIS spectra. For a 0.9M , the best fit is an accretion disk with a mass accretion rate Ṁ 1⁄4 10 8:5 to 10 M yr 1 with an inclinat...

Oxygen Gas Phase Abundance Revisited

We present new measurements of the interstellar gas-phase oxygen abundance along the sight lines towards 19 early-type galactic stars at an average distance of 2.6 kpc. We derive O I column densities from HST/STIS observations of the weak 1355 Å intersystem transition. We derive total hydrogen column densities [N(H I)+2N(H2)] using HST/STIS observations of Lyman-α and FUSE observations of molec...

Unveiling Su Aurigae in the near Infrared: New high spatial resolution results using Adaptive Optics

We present here new results on circumstellar nebulosity around SU Aurigae, a T-Tauri star of about 2 solar mass and 5 Myrs old at 152 pc in the J, H and K bands using high resolution adaptive optics imaging (0. 30) with the Penn state IR Imaging Spectrograph (PIRIS) at the 100 inch Mt. Wilson telescope. A comparison with HST STIS optical (0.2 to 1.1 micron) images shows that the orientation of ...
